City Lit Opera School provides training for those interested in applying for entry to conservatoires or for entering the profession. Participants come with a range of backgrounds and experiences: those moving from an undergraduate course and wanting time to consolidate skills before the next stage in their careers, people who have had a break and want to get back into performing, and people who just want a chance to explore their potential.|
The course involves vocal production sessions, stage-craft, language coaching and production sessions. Typically, these lead to a workshop performance of scenes at the end of terms one and two. In term three a fuller production is mounted, ensuring that all participants have the opportunity of singing a more substantial role. Longer term plans include taking the final performance with orchestra to a festival outside London.
Module 1 includes improvisation, how to sing recitative, how to work in ensembles (musically and on stage), production of scenes (to include recitative and ensemble work in English). The scenes will involve textual work and improvisation before the actual blocking so that the character and the production grow naturally and easily.
Module 2 builds on module 1. The recitative sessions explore singing recitative in foreign languages (principally Italian). The ensembles are larger and more complicated, sung in original languages. Again there will be a workshop performance of scenes studied throughout the term.
Module 3 draws on the skills developed during the year and leads to a larger production.
