The City Lit Opera School celebrates summer and the end of the academic year with Purcell's Fairy Queen

The City Lit runs a year-long course for singers preparing for conservatoires or entering the profession with staged workshop performances at the end of each term.  The final term sees a full length, fully staged production and the 2016 theme of operas inspired by Shakespeare continues with Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen.  Composed in 1692 near the end of Purcell’s short career, it is an adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the ‘semi opera’ form (a play with incidental music and acts followed by musical masques) popular in the 1600s.  Three performances take place around the traditional Midsummer Day (June 24) and the third will take place in an open air amphitheatre, so some warm midsummer weather magic wouldn’t go amiss…

Purcell’s The Fairy Queen will be performed at the Jack Lyon Theatre in London’s City Lit on June 22 and 24; it will then tour to Maldon in Essex where it opens the Maldon Festival on June 25.
