Garsington Opera runs for a month in the summer and successfully
combines a repertoire of well-known operas with discoveries of
little-known works. These have included the British premieres of
Haydn's Orlando Paladino, Richard Strauss' Die ägyptische
Helena, Rossini's La Gazzetta, Janáček's Sárka, Rossini's Armida,
and first British professional productions of Haydn's La vera
costanza, Richard Strauss' Die Liebe der Danae,
Schumann's Genoveva, and Martinů's Mirandolina.
Garsington Opera is located in a setting of extraordinary beauty at Wormsley, in the Chiltern Hills. Their specially designed seasonal opera pavilion is set in rolling, verdant parkland, next to pretty cluster of flinted buildings that includes a house, barns, orchard, lawns and a small garden. It is an intimate corner amidst the spectacular open parkland that it overlooks. The opera company moved to Wormsley from Garsington Manor in 2011.
Garsington Opera has made a point of giving
a platform to young international singers making their debut in this
country and of using some of the country's finest young singers. The
Garsington Opera Orchestra is made up of talented young musicians many
of whom are soloists in their own fields.
A series of chamber
concerts are also held in the spring and an expanding educational
programme is run in conjunction with the opera productions.
