Garsington Opera’s Youth Company perform John Barber's Eliza and the Swans
Garsington Opera’s Learning and participation work features a variety of opportunities for communities to be involved in creating, learning about and performing opera. This summer has seen a project in partnership with local schools based on The Magic Flute leading to a shared performance featuring180 children and 3 professional singers.
The season may be over but there is one more event on the main stage – the result of Easter and Summer residences for Garsington Opera’s Youth Company during which young people from the local area work with professional stage and music directors. This year the 80-strong company will be performing John Barber and Hazel Gould’s Eliza and the Swans, originally commissioned by the W11 Children's Opera Trust in 2015. An update of Hans Christian Andersen's Wild Swans, the tale of a young princess who has to rescue her brothers from an evil queen is about growing up and leaving home.
The performance, for an audience of family and friends, will be followed by The Bureau of Small Things a short piece performed by the Garsington Adult Chorus and devised during the Magic Flute project.
The Garsington Opera Youth Company will be performing a new production of Eliza and the Swans, by John Barber (composer) and Hazel Gould (librettist), at Wormsley on Friday August 3 for an invited audience.
