Mahogany Opera Group premieres Rolf Hind’s new opera based on meditation techniques

Mahogany Opera Group, whose aim is to create new opera in new ways, stretching the boundaries of what opera can be, are this autumn co-producing with the Barbican a hybrid of immersive musical performance which they describe as the world’s first ‘mindfulness opera’.  It will be part of Transcender, the Barbican’s autumn season of devotional and psychedelic music from across the globe.

Mindfulness is the practise of engaging in the unfolding of experience with heightened awareness in a nonjudgmental way and Lost in Thought is based on the classic structure of an extended meditation, exploring the points of contact between sound and silence in music and meditation.

Specially designed for an intimate audience, mezzo-soprano Lore Lixenberg and seven musicians will accompany the audience on a four hour inner journey with periods of meditation, rest, communal eating, and a gentle yoga session.  The aim is to dissolve the boundary between performer and audience and between time and experience.

Mahogany Opera’s production of Lost in Thought by Rolf Hind, co-produced with the Barbican and directed by Frederic Wake-Walker has its world premiere at LSO St Luke’s on 25 September as part of the Barbican’s Transcender series.  The production will then tour across the UK.
