Oxford's New Chamber Opera premiers a piece designed specifically for the New College Ante-chapel

New Chamber Opera regularly alternates Baroque operas with new work and this year it’s a chamber opera in one act based on a story by Anton Chekhov addressing themes of redemption and the transcendent power of music.  The protagonist is a poor coffin maker in an undistinguished town who suffers with financial worries and plays in the local orchestra where he finds consolation in music but hates Rothschild, a flautist, who contrives to make every piece of music sound melancholy.  Successful young composer Marco Galvani features piano, vibraphone, gong and bass drum in Rothschild’s Violin, designed to complement the acoustic in the company’s regular venue, the New College Ante-chapel where it opens on February 11 for two performances.
