OperaCoast has been running a variety of vocal and opera courses and workshops (including Russian vocal repertoire and community choir development) and providing upcoming singers and musicians with performing experience since 2011. The company, based in Sussex, attracts participants from all over the UK and from abroad. Their summer courses, based in East Sussex, include the public performance of an opera.
This year it is Puccini’s La Rondine (sung in English), the tale of two couples: the courtesan Magda, who falls in love with, and escapes to the French Riviera with Ruggero; and her maid Lisette, involved with the poet Prunier. Magda, Prunier tells her, is like a swallow who migrates towards the sun and true love – but can she stay living quietly with her new lover in Nice or will she fly back to Paris?
OperaCoast’s performance of Puccini’s La Rondine takes place at the Birley Centre, Eastbourne, on July 24.
