OperaUpClose was founded in October 2009 to produce La Bohème. Following sold-out runs in various venues, winning the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Opera Production and the Whatsonstage.com Best Off-West End Production Award, OperaUpClose became the resident company at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington, London. OperaUpClose are an associate company of Soho Theatre, with whom they have co-produced four productions. The company produces contemporary opera as well as new versions of the classics. OperaUpClose are building a UK and international touring reputation, co-producing with companies including the Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Malmo Opera House, visiting venues including the Bristol Tobacco Factory and festivals including Ravenna, Italy. In 2012 the company launched Flourish, an annual competition to find new chamber operas. It aims to provide a platform for emerging and established composers and librettists, and to raise awareness of the wealth of contemporary opera being written. The finalists’ work is produced in showcase format and the winning opera is given a full production the following year.
