Composers in residence around the country help celebrate Streetwise Opera anniversary
Britten’s Canticles inaugurated Streetwise Opera in 2002 and fifteen years on the company is taking inspiration from this acclaimed production for their celebratory season. Five composers, one in each of the company’s regions across England, have been selected to collaborate with Streetwise Opera’s performers to create original responses to the Canticles. In each case the composers have written a new 3-5 minute opera chorus with lyrics by local performers which will be performed during Opera Hour concerts.
Nottingham hosts the first Opera Hour with Alex Patterson’s chorus The Door. For Newcastle Ella Jarman-Pinto has created The Light and in Middlesborough it’s The Flower Seed by Bushra El-Turk. The chorus for London is Riversong by Litha Efthymiou and the final event in Manchester features Kingdoms Come and Kingdoms Go by Anna Appleby.
Streetwise Opera’s Britten project opens in Nottingham on March 2 (Patterson) and continues in Newcastle (Jarman-Pinto) on March 9, Middlesborough (El-Turk), March 16, London (Efthymiou) April 1, and Manchester (Appleby) April 11.
